Carl's Roost:
Day 11 Observations
(Notes by Carl. Joanne is still cleaning up after
the tornado).
The 11-day chick is moving even more. We cannot get
very clear pictures, because it won't hold still
long enough! We can see the "motion artifacts" in
some images. We also see that if we repeat the same
slice over and over, it looks different each
time. Finally, we see lots of bright spots,
especially in the amnion, caused by "sloshing" of
the fluid as the chick moves.
We got lucky and found the chick holding still a
few times. We can see that he has grown a lot!
Frame 143 is the best. You can even see two parts
of the brain (forebrain and hindbrain). The body is
smaller, and not as easy to see as the head with its
huge eyes.
The upper albumen layer has shrunk considerably.
The allantois with its shell membranes and blood
vessels can be seen in many places. The chick's
aorta (main blood vessel) is also visible in many
frames.
