Days 17-21: Happy Birthday!
The Nursery
Chicks of All Shapes and Sizes
Baby chicks may not have the dazzling array of
shapes, colors, and sizes of their adult
counterparts, but they do display some variety. Some
are downy; some are frizzled. Some are yellow; some are
mottled. Some are puffy, some are even bald!
This page is meant for fun. Collected here are some
of the more interesting chick photos found on FeatherSite,
"an on-line zoological garden of domestic
poultry". Each image is hyperlinked to the original
page so one can compare the juvenile with the
adult. FeatherSite has its own baby
chick page, with more varieties than are
displayed here.
The Chickscope resource Standard
Varieties of Chickens makes a good
companion piece to this page. Like
FeatherSite, it too has interesting
photos and engaging text.

These chicks appear much as people expect:
soft yellow and white colors. The chick on the
left is a Buff Japanese; the one one the right a
Polish White Bantam.

These two varieties are not quite the bright
yellow one would normally expect to see. The one
on the left is a Blue Silkie; the other, a Red
Silkie.

The Buff Brahma Bantam chick on the left has
shades of white, brown and black. The Mille
Fleur chick on the right could almost pass for a
sparrow.

Yikes! This poor Frizzle Chick is having a
serious "bad feather day". Maybe she stole the
Turken Chick's toupee? (The Turken chick has not
been plucked: they are naturally bald.)
