Day 14: The Skeleton
What Do Bones Do?
Bones provide structure, support,
and protection for most of the soft tissues of
the body.
Bones provide a framework for
muscles to move. (How are bird skeletons adapted
for flight? You can find the answer by reading
the section How are
bones different in birds?)
Bones store minerals, such as
calcium, for the body to use when
needed. Calcium is used for many cellular
processes. (What additional special needs do
birds have for calcium? You can find the answer
by reading the section How are bones different
in birds?)
Bone marrow makes blood
cells.
