Day 12: Image Processing
An MRI's View
Frame 22 is a "top view" showing the bottom
surface of the yolk. Some of the blood vessels
that bring nutrients to the chick can be seen
running across the bottom surface of the yolk.
There are many blood vessels in the egg,
connecting the chick to the yolk and to the
membranes along the inside of the shell which are
used to breathe (remember, the shell is
porous). These blood vessels appear bright if they
pass through the MRI slice. (In frame 65, the
aorta and another vessel at the bottom edge of the
air sac at G5, both pass through the MRI slice and
appear bright.) If the blood vessels lie entirely
within the MRI slice, they will appear darker (as
they do in frame 22)
