Day 2: The Heart of the Matter
3-D Reconstruction of a 48 Hour Chick Embryo
This image was made by slicing a fixed 48
hour chick embryo in very thin sections from head
to toe. The sections were then photographed under
the microscope and brought into a
computer. Special software was used to restack the
slices into a three-dimensional volume, and even
make a 3-D movie!
The different layers and organs are colored in the
following manner: ectoderm (blue), mesoderm (red), and
endoderm (yellow). The blue neural tube becomes the
brain and nervous system. Parts of the eye and ear
also come from the neural tube. The yellow gut
becomes the digestive tract. The heart and blood
vessels are derived from mesoderm and are colored red.
